Windows NT Installation

Installation using 2940U2W and 2940UW Dual/NE with IDE CD-ROM (configuration with GX1p)

Windows NT 4.0 does not have built in support for the Adaptec 2940U2W. That means the customer may have difficulty reinstalling NT on the OptiPlex GX1p with the 2940U2W. NT 4.0 will always try to boot from the first mass storage device it detects on setup. To ensure the 2940U2W is recognized properly you must interrupt the mass storage detection with the following procedure:

  1. Insert the Windows NT Setup Boot disk #1 into floppy drive A:, start the computer, and insert the Windows NT CDROM into the CDROM drive. The Windows NT Setup process begins with hardware detection.

  2. At the end of the hardware detection phase, Setup asks for Setup Disk #2. Insert disk #2 and press Enter.

  3. Press Enter again to "set up Windows NT."

  4. Setup then displays the mass storage detection screen. You have two options:
    1. Press Enter to continue with detection (recommended),
    2. Skip mass storage device detection (allows the user to manually specify devices that are not automatically detected by Windows NT Setup).

  5. Press S immediately to skip Windows NT Setupís auto detection of your SCSI adapter.
  6. Press S again to specify an additional device.
  7. Press ENTER to select Others, and insert the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette. If the system is configured with the 2940U2W, select the "Adaptec AHA-294xU2/295xU2/AIC-789x PCI Ultra2 SCSI Controller (NT 4.0)" and press ENTER. If it is configured with the 2940UW Dual/NE, select the ďAdaptec AHA290x/291x/294x/394x/4944/AIC-78xx PCI SCSI Controller (NT 4.0).
  8. press S again when it gets to the screen where it says it has the SCSI card and then add the IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2/PCI IDE CONTROLLER and itíll all work.
  9. Press ENTER to continue with the Windows NT operating system setup
  10. Setup then asks for Setup Disk #3.

  11. Continue with the setup as usual.

2940U2W and 2940UW DUAL/NE with SCSI CD-ROM

These cards are not recognized by NT and must be installed using the disks provided during mass storage detection. Specs can be found on OTI.

The following instructions explain how to install the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set when installing Windows NT 4.0.

  1. Start your system with the Windows NT Boot Diskette in the floppy drive.
  2. Insert diskette #2 when prompted. After a few moments you will see a blue screen. To setup Windows NT now, press ENTER.
  3. Press S to skip Windows NT Setup's auto detection of your SCSI adapter.
  4. Press S again to specify an additional device.
  5. Press ENTER to select Others, and insert the Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set v2.1x diskette.
  7. If you want to add other host adapters (that are not a part of the 7800 Family), do so at this time by pressing 'S' and repeating step 5 for each additional adapter and inserting the appropriate disk provided by the hardware manufacturer. The Adaptec 7800 Family host adapters use the same driver; it is not necessary to install the aic78xx.sys driver again.
  8. Press ENTER to continue with the Windows NT operating system setup.
