FAT32 Conversion

Windows 98 will be bundled with a utility to convert a partition from FAT16 to FAT32.

It will not convert back.

At this time, Dell does not support conversion to FAT32. The conversion program is an easy to use Windows application; the steps are outlined below:

First, a window will open up describing the function of the program. It also provides a basic outline of the procedure.

After the next button on the previous screen is clicked the window advises what sate the system will be in after conversion. It also has a reminder that this procedure is not reversable. It also checks to see if Windows NT is installed and advises that Windows NT 4.0 and earlier will not be able to access a FAT32 drive.

The next step advises that the wizard will have to restart the computer and that all other programs must be closed before the user can continue the operation.

Then the user selects the drive to convert.

After drive selection, the next window advises some visus preotection software and disk utilities may not work with FAT32. The conversion program will prform a search for such programs.

The conversion program will display any incompatible programs it finds as well as a progressive status bar indicating how much of the detection process has been completed.

After checking for any programs that are known to be incompatible with FAT32 but prior to performing the conversion the conversion program will allow for a back up to be performed that way if any data loss occurs recovery is possible.

The final user interactive step is rebooting the system. After clicking on the finish button the system will be rebooted. After post but prior to loading the operating system a DOS program will run which actually does the conversion. After the conversion the GUI will be loaded.

To verify that a partition is FAT32 just bring up the partition properties by right clicking on the icon for the drive and left clicking the properties drop down menu item.

The first tab (the General Tab) shows the Label, underneath the label the type of drive is shown, and just below there is the File system which is analogous to the partition type. In this case it shows FAT32.
