Windows Explorer

Similar to My Computer, Microsoft® Windows® Explorer displays the contents of your computer as an ordered list, or tree. You can use this program to locate files on any drive or folder in your computer.

To open Windows Explorer:

  1. click the Start button
  2. point to Programs
  3. click Windows Explorer.

Alternatively, you can right-click the Start button and then click Explore.

The left window pane shows drives and directories (folders)

The right pane lists the files in the drive or folder selected.

  • A + to the left of a drive or folder indicates the presence of additional folders.
  • Click the + to expand the view one level.
  • To collapse the view, click - to the left of a drive or folder.

Showing Files

It is important that the user can "see" the hidden directories and files as well as the file type by extension.

To change the Windows Explorer default settings;

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Click on View
  3. Click on Folder Options
  4. Click on the View Tab
  5. Set the Advanced Settings to "Show All Files"
  6. Uncheck the box next to "Hide file extensions for known file types"
  7. Click OK.
