Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu

  1. Normal
  2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
  3. Safe Mode
  4. Step-by-step confirmation
  5. Command prompt only
  6. Safe mode command prompt only

Enter a choice: 1       Time remaining: 30

F5=safe mode  Shift+F5=Command Prompt  Shift+F*=Step-by-step confirmation  [N]

  • Normal
    Windows starts loading all the drivers and devices installed

  • Safe Mode
    Windows starts loading minimal drivers and devices

  • Step-by-step confirmation
    The user is prompted to confirm the loading of Config.sys and Autoexec.bat drivers and devices if any

  • Command prompt only
    Does not load the Windows GUI or any protected mode drivers or devices and leaves the user at a command prompt.

  • Safe mode command prompt only
    Does not load the Windows GUI and skips all startup files such as Config.sys and Autoexec.bat and leaves the user at a command prompt.

Enabling the Startup Menu

In Windows 95

  • Watch for the Starting Windows 95 message
  • Press the F8 key
  • Choose the mode desired

In Windows 98

  • Press and hold the Left Control Key during post

  • OR

  • While in Windows
    1. Click Start
    2. Choose Run
    3. Type MSCONFIG

    4. On General Page Click on Advanced

    5. Click in Box next to Enable Startup Menu

    6. Click Ok
    7. Click OK when prompted to restart
  • Choose the mode desired
